want to bring tears on the slide welcome to e. p. f. l. welcome to e. p. f. else
00:00:06
line c. research today not that resource goes on only
00:00:10
one paper here and see this is the
00:00:13
day on which we open the doors and show to all of you what we do
00:00:17
a few words about e. p. f. l. first uh so those a lot for those of you don't know us
00:00:22
a couple of things first message where you say it was a feel the potatoes lesson fifty years ago
00:00:28
we're young university where you're you're a university that's been growing at a rate that is
00:00:34
that is probably on that in your open only to be found in asia
00:00:39
we have three missions we educate we do research and we let's say have impact
00:00:44
positive impact on society through tech transfer and a variety of other initiatives
00:00:50
and we're federal institution that we funded by the swiss taxpayer mainly through
00:00:55
our basic endowment which covers about two thirds of a budget of roughly one billion swiss francs per year
00:01:01
but a lot of our money is roughly a third this third party funding which we gather from
00:01:07
both the swiss national science foundation swiss funding agencies european funding agencies and the private sector
00:01:14
notice a small tuitions were located in those on where you sit here but
00:01:19
also beyond in that we have four antennas as we call them
00:01:23
uh in geneva in the valet it's young inertia tell and info
00:01:28
people should add martini also for the for the sites
00:01:35
now what do we do we educate i'll just give you a few tidbits over the past year some
00:01:40
of you might have heard me last year so i don't want to bore you too much
00:01:43
uh but the grey and the grand um uh move the big moves that are going on in education
00:01:49
are very have a lot to do with this particular discipline that's covered today
00:01:54
they have a lot to do with the strong advances in digital technology delighted digital
00:02:00
uh that's a intelligence in in always and all senses of the word
00:02:05
that are going on today and we we we signal impact going from the youngest
00:02:09
uh by working together with the schools and offering a service advice
00:02:14
help and even little robots a reprise killing young people
00:02:19
in schools high schools for digital literacy and also we hope to is choosing careers in that field
00:02:26
or incoming students will see the third pillar added to their basic probably technical education
00:02:33
something we call computational thinking uh which is a an introduction to the fact that
00:02:41
that that computation is another mode of reasoning and most importantly of
00:02:46
folding practical problems than engineers and a number of other professions
00:02:50
well face in the decades to come in their daily work and so to map
00:02:54
which teaches regular physics which teaches that say the quantification of not natural phenomena
00:03:00
we have or we are adding computational thinking in the first year curriculum rink incoming students
00:03:08
and then after they graduate we try and the company our alumni and also alumni of other
00:03:14
uh universities in staying up to date we have an extension
00:03:18
school which is growing rapidly in size and impact
00:03:21
and its offerings and we also uh have students across
00:03:26
the globe through books massive online open courses
00:03:31
uh this is a map of stop putting numbers on it because it keeps changing my slight becomes obsolete all the time
00:03:37
we've have gone beyond two million e. p. f. l. students not alumni in
00:03:42
only a portion of them get a degree but over two million
00:03:46
uh connected e. p. f. l. students people across the globe and these little dots indicate where
00:03:51
i'm a study and learn through what we offer to the world over the web
00:03:58
few tidbits in research now we have of course a group a
00:04:05
wide range of activities are just them mention if you
00:04:08
uh those are you like coming to the campus on the weekends might have noticed that on one day
00:04:13
i'm not too long ago that were drones flying all over the place
00:04:16
and robots crawling around on the campus this is an open
00:04:20
robotics day we have an n. c. c. r. we have several groups that are very active
00:04:24
the activities of which range from from a little educational robot call team you know uh from
00:04:31
for just come and others group which is having quite some success in the country
00:04:35
uh to to help for up for with x. o. skeletons to to uh to uh
00:04:41
people for example who who have become that's what you see on the on the upper
00:04:46
right hand picture is is someone just actually published a book which is launched here
00:04:51
uh who who it was perilous will waste down it can now walk thanks to annex a skeleton
00:04:57
uh of course this is all cutting edge and therefore difficult but it's uh it's something which is now pushed into
00:05:03
uh even sports events and it's quite spectacular to various other lobe or trees
00:05:08
but make flying or crawling robots as you can see in these open the world that connects
00:05:13
man and or or machines sorry and through man sometimes
00:05:19
um uh the the the digital world and
00:05:22
we also have another area of of scripture strengthened and strong activity in in your prosthetics and those
00:05:29
more intimately connects technology let's say in the general sense and human beings
00:05:36
we had one event that was that was a nice one a careful competed
00:05:40
uh with a uh uh the the solar backup on which is a
00:05:44
worldwide competition laws by the department of energy in united states
00:05:48
and uh the e. p. f. l. team actually won the first prize uh for the design of the self sufficient
00:05:54
phone call the neighbour hub which beyond being a self sufficient home is is a hub for sustainable living
00:06:01
that met with a sufficient who's as an expansion for us to gain the first prize
00:06:05
the this was a collaboration between several universities are antenna comprising aren't turning free pool
00:06:12
and a lot of other people hear it in on on the on the those on campus
00:06:17
it's it's a very nice achievement uh especially when you consider it some of the adversity that was faced because
00:06:23
the moment when this was shipped to the united states uh there were few let's say a um a weather
00:06:29
related uh obstacles well on the way and the non the less mated which we're very proud of
00:06:35
e. p. f. l. is as you know the sight of one
00:06:38
of europe's now three that flagship projects the human brain project
00:06:43
uh it is now roughly midway across the it's ten year program
00:06:47
uh we're proud to say that it's advancing nicely it's it's it's a major challenge to run something like that
00:06:53
uh but we do our best and as mentioned it's a very exciting and
00:06:56
an interesting project making progress we we tried also launch other projects through
00:07:02
uh that that can foster interdisciplinary he's very nice partnership you may have heard about
00:07:07
between the archives of venice and e. p. f. l. faculty including one that was in
00:07:13
part with line see and that's a venice time machine that any time machine
00:07:19
takes advantage of the fact that venice is archives the archives of the of the republican venice
00:07:24
are all located in one area this happen when napoleon invaded the city
00:07:29
uh all located in one area represent eighty kilometres of absolutely unique history
00:07:34
unique both in the sense that there there and preserved but also unique in the sense that venice having been ripped public
00:07:40
uh is is is of quite unique witness to europe about earth
00:07:45
but five hundred years ago and plus minus several centuries
00:07:49
this now is being who is is moving to was too it's doing the
00:07:54
same across europe across to your european continent we have a proposal
00:07:58
which was we're proud to say among the seventeen suggests that
00:08:01
selected for the next step for yet another fact flagship
00:08:06
the um the school where long way from winning that but we're working on it it's very exciting that were selected to do so
00:08:12
of course a lot of our research is related to what martin
00:08:15
are present lexical the digital to tsunami and a very exciting
00:08:20
initiative joint with our sister school in zurich is this without a sign centre
00:08:25
i'm sure that you'll hear more about it so will keep quite
00:08:29
uh but it's worth mentioning another thing that's worth mentioning as far as research is concerned is
00:08:33
that we push hard for signs generated at e. p. f. l. to be open
00:08:38
it's it's a complex path in in a very moving world
00:08:41
but one that we embrace and find interesting and important
00:08:45
and then just a few words a c. m. two minutes from ten o'clock so i think i'm roughly on track
00:08:50
um innovation innovation i will not say too much but is the third pillar
00:08:56
on which we use a third mission sorry that we have something with push push very hard for
00:09:01
b. main point perhaps worth making is that we have what we call an innovation park
00:09:07
which has been here for quite awhile e. e. p. f. l. uh decades ago was quite if
00:09:12
we had a two two decades ago was a pioneer in that and is bearing is fruit
00:09:16
we have a portion of the campus call the innovation parking you can see there and the lower left hand corner
00:09:22
uh which is a place that is a little bit
00:09:26
outside of university per se it that it doesn't have classrooms it was nice tunes
00:09:32
it has companies that have startups it has places where companies start of
00:09:38
on one hand and the universe taken me but most importantly it's right there next
00:09:42
next to the campus which you see in that larger
00:09:45
a white a rectangle so that interactions between
00:09:51
students groups want just make a start up and a place where they can do it or
00:09:55
companies and researchers on campus are easy fluid and constant
00:10:00
and with that and that's my last slide or slide before last was on this
00:10:06
not so big city i think it's a hundred fifty thousand inhabitants if you count the source
00:10:10
compare region maybe that was on has been a ranked as you can see here
00:10:14
uh within a week that comprises somewhat larger cities like but reader
00:10:19
double dublin or berlin something we're quite proud of as well
00:10:23
thank you for attention i think it's ten o'clock i think it's time for the serious stuff
