00:00:00
right as the big guy takes off his position on the side of the face okay
00:00:04
i welcome to this afternoon's uh sessions i should say without a a lot this morning about
00:00:11
technology and innovation in sports and how it's driving in changing sport
00:00:15
we're gonna focus possible this afternoon on the way in which that sporting technology and innovation
00:00:22
is a affecting in impacting on our everyday life and
00:00:26
there is perhaps no better example of that
00:00:29
been through the world of mergers board and how changes
00:00:33
affected at the tall have a trickle down
00:00:36
into the well the real live and driving a normal meg here is is the uh
00:00:42
safety director for the international automobile federation you have your own talking in the panel oh yeah
00:00:48
he's not gonna provide you a specific presentation on the world
00:00:53
uh but it's been corrected to see all mergers for
00:00:57
innovation and technology legends and lore meg yes
00:01:05
yeah yeah
00:01:09
thank you good afternoon ladies and gentlemen thank you very much for uh as you
00:01:14
about eighty to a exchange together today about a half safety research activity
00:01:21
as as some of you may know the years here phi as the uh
00:01:24
one little spot governing body as the quite a large safety research activity
00:01:29
and that's what we wanted to present uh to you today what do we develop
00:01:34
within these uh safety work and and more importantly how do we then go
00:01:39
from uh what we developed for the approval championships with all the technology available how do we then go to
00:01:45
uh do and get all the drivers on computers all one rolled into
00:01:50
national race he's uh how do they benefit from that safety wise
00:01:54
um so this is the a few things that we will uh go through to do that today uh first
00:02:00
we will show you an example of all crash investigation because this is where most
00:02:05
of all safety work he starting a within our capability to investigate crashes um
00:02:11
and then we will give you a few examples of what jesus safety research for for model sport or at
00:02:16
least how do we go about it and in the second part of the presentations we will um
00:02:23
try to write exchange about uh how do we then go from
00:02:28
the top level for gospel to everybody uh having a a race on sunday afternoon in
00:02:35
a in their in their regional uh a partner regional part of the world
00:02:40
and i'm finally in the in the last sections uh perhaps the most important for
00:02:44
the coming years uh how do we ensure that the road user ah you
00:02:51
as everybody in their world car benefits from all these amount of
00:02:55
safety research uh that is put into into model sport years after years
00:03:00
so
00:03:02
first from a process point of view it might sound a bit boring but this is where a
00:03:06
everything start for us uh with which crash investigations uh also after accidents uh pretty much any
00:03:13
serious accident that's weapon will while when that will end up on our desk and we will have to conduct the investigations
00:03:19
uh from that as we discussed this morning there is nothing we do to actually of what accent to happen
00:03:24
but we would like to find solutions for um the accident not to
00:03:28
have any consequences for eyes rather the proposal all the spectators
00:03:33
i'm from that we had nobody comes out a new safety features so we invent something
00:03:38
and you safety equipment and you better yeah and you highlight and you
00:03:41
crash test um and this goes eventually into regulations which will
00:03:46
uh sooner or later a given of the accident and hopefully the processing proving that way
00:03:52
now we also like to think that we have our own drive to make racing safer we don't just wait for next and to happen
00:03:58
a lot of the safety research work he's also driven by uh how long
00:04:02
drive to uh try to make model sport a a safer environment
00:04:08
so we wanted to give you one example of crash investigations some of you uh
00:04:13
might be familiar with the example that uh we are going to take
00:04:16
uh we have developed over the years a number of um
00:04:21
they'd also sees to produce a best possible crash investigations
00:04:26
we are very lucky we are able to
00:04:28
a group the cost and the drivers with a very high number of sense so that give us to use that on page compared to
00:04:33
say the road accidents all uh any any other sort of accidents in
00:04:37
sports where we can actually have the data of what's happening
00:04:40
so we have what we call accident data recorder the black box with like when you what you
00:04:44
have in an aeroplane that gives you the key for see that happen during an accident
00:04:49
then we also measure these forces directly into the driver's head so dry there's a top level
00:04:54
of a model support actually where yep p. c.'s in which we feed exeter which is
00:05:00
and and these give us an indication of uh the amount of
00:05:04
energy level that the brothers had c. during an accident
00:05:08
so you can already see here a key aspect for us because you know what the car has seen
00:05:14
and use than the what the drive us even in between the two of
00:05:17
you have a pretty much everything we do about fifteen model spot
00:05:21
from the safety equipment to crash test to z. um copied environment
00:05:27
and then we added a few uh more fancy elements we know
00:05:31
how the high speed camera uh facing the driver's head
00:05:34
doing uh at all time which give us incredible insight about what's happening
00:05:40
i'm doing an accident in term of like the formation in term of all the
00:05:44
helmets uh interact with the cockpit how's it hides moves inside the helmets and then
00:05:50
we uh had about biometric this morning's the last one on the right
00:05:54
hand side these uh i'll drivers on all equipped with biometric gloves
00:05:58
whereby all doctors have allied informations about the health status and the vital stages so when
00:06:04
alex and happen and you see them illegal copies of the track the doctors inside
00:06:09
the car actually know what is the uh bible studies of
00:06:12
the drivers in trying to improve our rescue a level
00:06:18
so this is an accident that happened um at the very beginning of
00:06:22
twenty sixteen it was actually the first time that we had or
00:06:26
this is installed on the cost so um i found out that also was kind
00:06:29
enough to try them or so you first thought the first crash here
00:06:34
against the wall that's what we call a trash one that's crash too whiny role
00:06:41
onto the rubble double that's crash three when he's a heavy landing a uh over there
00:06:48
you're going to see it from a z. on balls the kind from which doesn't
00:06:52
give you much but that's uh that was just for that and something k. p. h. uh accident
00:06:59
now
00:07:01
that's what we get after the accident not very user friendly but we're going to go through together so
00:07:07
this is a time line at the beginning of the accident at the end of the accidents
00:07:11
that's the g. forces on the car and we are going to to go
00:07:15
to go through that together so that's when you remember the first
00:07:19
what we call it loss of control happens the first point where actually
00:07:23
the car contacted together on and be actually don't stop it
00:07:27
that we had the impact one you remember when the fallible stock crashed into the wall
00:07:32
that was a forty five g. impact on to the car as you can see it's it's purely that fall so
00:07:39
the brothers only sees a lot for the impact of the cost because the guy still troubling extremely fast forward
00:07:45
and on his wife here you can see what these brain sees that the accelerator that id
00:07:52
is he is um and so they react as you see the two big here they
00:07:56
react easy to impact he had with the wall the first with the front wheel and
00:08:00
then with the real with me then you remember when the car started to roll
00:08:05
well that's a dose of all these huge impact doesn't too pretty bad but it's as bad as
00:08:11
a first contact with the war and fortunately for him same side and again purely out for
00:08:20
and you can see the slightly different reactions from is yes and um brain in
00:08:26
that in that second crash and then you have the very heavy landing
00:08:31
here so as you can see it's not the spike in a mall it's not not for
00:08:35
anymore that's just the longitudinal that's a um a a a a landing very soft
00:08:42
a crash which uh let's see i'm also given a a chance just to survive
00:08:47
yeah so said the sort of day that we get a after every crash
00:08:52
and with the high speed cameras that we shoulder audio for each of these
00:08:57
time stamp we have for that frame plastic cans of images showing what the
00:09:02
drive a dozen and how the uh had is moving into the cockpit
00:09:08
so
00:09:11
so that's what we do pretty much for a or major accidents
00:09:16
and what we send to reside is that we use that to design the next generation
00:09:20
of equipment next iteration of him at the next generations of headrest concrete environments um
00:09:28
by by understanding what are the injuries facials for cox elevations bright
00:09:33
x. iterations resent design i like with bands to that limit
00:09:39
that the sort of a images you get from that camera um
00:09:43
it's not very impressive like that but the beauty of it
00:09:46
is that it gives us for that from from best seconds which give us into neat little the days in it
00:09:52
in the instant of an accident we have got just before his accident here to avoid a showing uh but images
00:10:01
so what do we do next
00:10:07
then we start the research so we take another example now oh
00:10:20
why there was a sony hard uh oh very serious spy injuries during
00:10:27
the accident look please uh ease fully recover now he's racing again
00:10:31
um however it was for us a a a striking
00:10:35
examples because we're getting a lot of spinal injury
00:10:38
bean in this sort of cost and we're we're not getting them in all
00:10:42
the category of models also what we did is that we've reproduced
00:10:46
see complete uh at exact positions of on twenty in the car and we've put
00:10:51
him in a in an m. r. i. scanned to understand exactly um how
00:10:55
was it in the car so that's how it looks um and and from
00:11:01
that date are we have a field of yep sure crash test model
00:11:08
it's something we do in partnership with we still doubled accompanying up an autograph try
00:11:13
to reproduce the trash so you remember from the first accident we have
00:11:16
all the prostate that we know exactly what jack situations where and what the
00:11:20
driver that's seen and we are going to ask the simulations reproduce that
00:11:24
and quite incredibly just summations is able to reproduce the injuries suffered by anthony
00:11:32
so if you get to that level of accuracy use and start to scan everything you say okay i know for this
00:11:37
crash is uh for these injuries now what can i do for the same crash to get him to walk away
00:11:45
i just got everything you scanned the sit positions you scanned the
00:11:48
headdress shape just kinda had met you scan the events geometry
00:11:52
and and eventually from that you end up having you recommendations for how to see that
00:11:57
was in the car all what equipment to develop so in that specific example
00:12:02
um the very same cry she was it was seated as on that picture here at
00:12:08
the study five degrees angle so very very much lay back into the car um
00:12:13
she had been seated slightly more upright here he would not have had the
00:12:18
um um it's final factors that you had so it just sort of
00:12:23
uh tools we are using to develop our equipments
00:12:30
now
00:12:32
so most uh difficult but how do you get is that the rest of the sport so
00:12:38
as you have seen it is very much everything is very much data driven we do pretty much does thing if we don't have the data also these
00:12:44
these these nice but box we have them mean in about thirty five championships war why it's it's a bit more
00:12:50
than one thousand cars and that's a drive for for for everything we do um then when we have that
00:12:58
we have to find ways to develop the fancy technology to zero that category of all the sport
00:13:02
is very easy to have very safe environment in informal wanting w. all seen from what he
00:13:07
uh it's a lot more difficult to get the same safe environment for national racing
00:13:13
uh with a lot lower a budget for the cars a lot lower budgets for the equipments
00:13:19
so mm mm as an example of how he's that that's the way we do with the um
00:13:26
helmets so we the f. i. as its own handed stand out we talked about it briefly this morning
00:13:33
um we believe it that way of putting it what makes it the safest head right in the world however
00:13:41
uh it's an expensive at night it's not something we can mandate for all categories of products possible like
00:13:46
so what do you do when you are there will which shows the approach of saying
00:13:52
okay that's all best highlights uh we can we can sleep copy
00:13:56
at night however let's make one that these eighty percent
00:14:02
as safe as a top one but cost ten percent of the price
00:14:08
it's a bit philosophical was uh one should be going to the direction or not but that's what we chose to do and that's how we feel the
00:14:14
a national market with a helmet that these costing it ten percent of uh the one that they would have it done whereas
00:14:21
but uh he's providing um as as much as eighty percent of the of the safety level
00:14:26
and we have don't also the same sort of approach for um all the
00:14:30
categories of users and such as the children's and and and so on
00:14:36
or yeah now we do that for the helmet we do that for everything else so that's um yeah
00:14:43
a small video that explain how we do that for pretty much anything that that uh everything right
00:14:52
as i say
00:14:56
no where
00:15:01
overall
00:16:06
right
00:16:07
oh yes yes
00:16:11
i
00:16:15
so that's the approach we took ah we basically
00:16:19
one okay don't satisfy anything that doesn't draw those uh which means that there is a research work
00:16:25
the same one that the one you have seen for the highlight of
00:16:27
listing sitting positions we do that for every single piece of equipment
00:16:33
that would probably just on dot and then any company in the world can try to pass the stand
00:16:38
out and that's the only equipment we would follow a international or a model spots to be using
00:16:47
so it's been a long long way to get to the several uh but that's the uh approach that we um
00:16:54
i think gave us a tremendous results when it came to reducing the number off of fatalities will like
00:17:01
now um
00:17:04
from racing to the road structural we call them at the f. i. um
00:17:08
this is the projects we have embarked i'm a little while ago
00:17:12
in order to not only try to the probably what we learn we stop model sport for
00:17:18
a smaller categories but more importantly perhaps to try to learn from that safety
00:17:23
research a fault um for the end user for the road users
00:17:28
so there is many many examples that we could take a alley was
00:17:31
here this morning and and and showcasing formula easy um the
00:17:36
f. i. as three hybrid or electric championships well wild uh
00:17:40
for a one uh what on the restaurant digits informally
00:17:44
uh a lot of money factors are going to have to develop new technology for the batteries for their
00:17:50
n. jeans um and and and it has been a a very good drives for other what kind history as
00:17:56
well as a matter of example between two thousand and thirteen and two thousand and fourteen informal one
00:18:01
i sell best kept secret we don't like to to say it unfortunately but
00:18:05
be the the cars are using such a three percent less fuel
00:18:08
uh they got the same pace arguably the go faster now um but
00:18:13
with the introduction of the ivory technology we simply uh it
00:18:16
gets the food consumption by thirty three percent imagine if you're reading that them on your on your old car and that's hopefully
00:18:22
what's uh that work will eventually end up giving to to to every to everyone of us
00:18:28
um there is many all the example of where
00:18:32
model sport a research as zen given
00:18:36
uh applications to to the end users such as well you know
00:18:40
uh directions gearbox cabin does breaks all all all couple jesse
00:18:45
but we are not trying to to go on to the next step and
00:18:48
uh we have been tackling connected guy infrastructure for either why now
00:18:53
uh again we don't like to speak about it but effectively when you watch a former our what formula
00:18:57
one race it's already a practical environment uh the cost because infrastructure infrastructure speaks to the car
00:19:04
we can send message to the car the cock and send us messages um
00:19:08
series series rolls along where we could control the speed of the car
00:19:13
um there is basically all the elements to um to
00:19:17
have a very controlled i'm gonna to be cool
00:19:20
and to all of them is a with some of them with aspects of it environments
00:19:25
and and it's it's a play field where again we are welcoming some
00:19:29
uh a lot of players that can develop technologies that are as an
00:19:33
apply to uh to the uh end user on the road
00:19:38
now
00:19:40
the final two examples
00:19:43
the a. d. r. so it's one of the project that we are taking pretty much like for like into the world got so
00:19:49
the ideas of the black box offenders boxes that gives you all the fancy graphs on the g. forces on the car
00:19:55
from these g. forces of the got we have pretty much built
00:19:58
the on tire safety strategy when it comes to developing a
00:20:02
new technology and and and new equipment then you structure for the cost what we're putting these box into august now
00:20:09
um with the help of the mobility side of the if i we are i'm
00:20:14
having a few pilot projects where these boxes are going into into your costs
00:20:20
um and and from there we would be involved in to the crash investigations
00:20:25
of some of them to see if you can learn something more
00:20:27
about how to then develop so next generations of of safety features for
00:20:32
uh for the car but also for the copied environment um
00:20:38
and a final word of final well before i'm opening the filter questions um
00:20:45
in this context c. f. i. as a as a very interesting initiative weights mixing bowls
00:20:50
the spot size and the mobility side of the fire weekly it's mouth cities
00:20:55
e. t.'s full five events in the year where in the context of the format you raise
00:21:01
uh which is happening in the city centre we bring around the tables all the actors from the city
00:21:08
and from the spot side so would bring all the startup that are pushing
00:21:12
innovation in model spot and all the stuff that without pushing relations for
00:21:15
the next generation of c. t. n. and city traffic and we put them together in eleven that would cause a small city
00:21:22
the next one is on june lines during the formal i race
00:21:25
of zurich and uh as international federations you would be
00:21:28
a receiving invitations to join us there and to uh uh hopefully contribute to uh to making the next step
00:21:36
so thank you very much ah everybody for attention and i'm i'm more than happy to uh answer any question
00:21:48
i
00:21:51
no problem microphone is coming and we're
00:21:57
uh_huh
00:22:05
are we gonna hand hand held microphone of object right are bigger
00:22:11
okay yeah okay it's okay questions or couple actually gentleman there
00:22:18
you go first thank you uh_huh hi thanks hide or things that the uh presentation
00:22:27
uh comparing the competition and the road with your uh i'm asked all um
00:22:35
on the competition you improve the security while we're trying to also increase the speed of the car
00:22:41
whereas on the roads governments tend to improve the security by reducing the state of the car
00:22:48
um for instance the switching it to eighty or ninety
00:22:54
yeah there's our uh which is the top the opposite direction of where where we can
00:23:00
see in uh in the sports um so how could i file a um
00:23:07
i never improve that that level of consisted of correct or governments
00:23:12
to approach security from a different perspective than just releasing speed
00:23:18
but probably increasing on board securities or
00:23:24
infrastructure security i it's a very good point of course
00:23:28
um as as a fire mobility side we encourage
00:23:32
anything that would reduce fatalities or including the reduction of speed but when it comes to sports side
00:23:38
as we explain this morning when it comes to sports i there is nothing we do that should
00:23:41
take something away from the sport and therefore uh we try to have a a great uh
00:23:47
um improvement rate for the safety features of the cars and for the speed of the car
00:23:51
so we can have cost of cost uh the towns we have this year
00:23:55
in informal one in rally are the fastest kind history of the categories
00:24:00
and and and it's something that we feel a good about because we know that
00:24:04
the safety level that we brought in these cars ah ah unprecedented um
00:24:10
what would like to do i guess e. or ease ease that we would like to bring sets safety expertise into the world our business
00:24:16
but but i think there is no doubt that um you if if you are targeting uh
00:24:22
a reduction it involves fatalities you we want that to be complemented by uh the
00:24:27
region of speed as well so and that and this is where the
00:24:30
sports and and mobility um um agreed with the side but on our side we
00:24:36
we want to bring the safety features to the to the b. side
00:24:43
my question yes
00:24:46
um one of the biggest change we've seen design of the cars this year for a one is the introduction to handle
00:24:52
um how you approach case and in whatever expectation in the future around that
00:24:59
uh as sex that i've seen and so yeah there's a halo was uh
00:25:04
so hello was a obviously a very big projects five years of research a bit more
00:25:08
um we are putting it in formula one but also in or single seater categories as they
00:25:13
as they come up you um you know how many fatalities reason what models possible wide
00:25:19
rough idea
00:25:22
anybody wants to pick a number or model spots during one year worldwide whatever
00:25:27
categories of modest albright racing cross country i'm drifting uh what else
00:25:36
rallies uh endurance anything anywhere in the world
00:25:40
drive a school drivers spectators everybody
00:25:44
officials happens unfortunately media how many fatalities at the end of the year
00:25:50
somebody was a try
00:25:53
no no that too unfortunately it's it's really good anyway anywhere between fifty and one hundred
00:26:00
if you think about the amount of activities it's it's still a very very low number
00:26:06
so so halo came because um we have improved as we said this morning
00:26:11
dramatically the safety of the got the last thirty years we don't have
00:26:15
we have very tell intrusion anymore into the car which was the main pulled off of casualties
00:26:19
so the car protects the drivers legs and body from in most cases from um um
00:26:27
intrusions from outside however um the neck was still exposed and we have the hands that came in fifteen years
00:26:33
ago and protected the neck and all the head was the last one exposed for single seater categories
00:26:40
um and this is where you have still the where dawn on the yes her majors and all these
00:26:45
concussion work and and everything at to try to understand how to limits that are
00:26:49
and if you look at the next ten years you will have had impact
00:26:53
i'm from the brother's head to eyes on all the car or
00:26:58
a a piece of debris or um anything as a war
00:27:03
it might not be a lot might be i don't know ten twenty the next file thing
00:27:07
yes but if you look at the numbers if you wanna bring the fifty two two
00:27:12
that you need to go and uh after this once and that's that's what we've done with a halo
00:27:17
um i ironically there was a very significant incidents this weekend for the first time the halo
00:27:22
a former to racing in in spain and and and we could have had to wait two or three years to have that
00:27:29
but actually a a driver's escape very serious injuries ah s. thanks to the halo as
00:27:35
the way we have another got would've landed ah pretty much on his head as this weekend
00:27:40
so it's been a long long research work long fight to get
00:27:44
a people to understand what we uh we're trying to achieve
00:27:48
we happen shows that there is a i stated critics i will try to improve that but
00:27:52
the underlying objective was to go after these uh ten of twenty fatalities an expert opinions
00:28:03
more questions anybody
00:28:06
huh
00:28:08
oh that's our our technician or sell sci erica dramatics
00:28:19
i i was aware that there is to it yeah box
00:28:28
i i without that we did not want to share information
00:28:35
it is a very good question or a guy actually we it's been
00:28:38
a it's been a long fight um to get to their uh
00:28:42
out of the study five championships where we have about boxing it half of them are not a fire we have no jurisdiction
00:28:49
but they still do it tasted the because of that because we show them the safety research what we do with it
00:28:55
we show them that the next generation of cars whatever that racing ways we benefit from it
00:29:00
not now in three of times in five years times and and they act
00:29:03
like i guess the progress that's been made the last fifteen years
00:29:07
so it's been difficult to start but no uh uh let's see we go faster and
00:29:12
faster we we're at twenty championships two years ago we are thirty five nearly now
00:29:17
and and and we have a we have bigger than for that if you just so um uh
00:29:22
look the society becomes a bit more safety conscious and and there is a
00:29:26
um there is a drive to to go that way to date ownership is a good questions we
00:29:31
on the data so it's even more difficult than that because we on these data um
00:29:36
we guarantee the privacy and we also commits to give anybody with this um
00:29:42
i don't recall those uh that have a crash we we do the analysis for them for free and we use them back to them
