The first-ever World Humanitarian Summit (WHS), set to take place on 23-24 May 2016 in Istanbul, is a call to action by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reshape the global agenda for humanitarian action. It is managed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and implemented by the World Humanitarian Summit secretariat. The Summit will bring together governments, humanitarian organizations, people affected by humanitarian crises, the private sector and other partners to propose new and innovative solutions to the great humanitarian challenges of today and tomorrow. The World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) two-year consultation process (April 2014 - October 2015) aimed to help build a more inclusive and diverse humanitarian system by bringing all key stakeholders together to share best practices and find innovative ways to make humanitarian action more effective. The WHS Global Consultation took place in Geneva on 14-16 October 2015. The Global Consultation was hosted by the Government of Switzerland and co-organised and co-chaired by Switzerland and OCHA. It gathered some 950 high-level participants such as representative from Governments, people affected by crises, United Nations organizations, components of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, NGOs, civil society, the private sector and academia. The Global Consultation is a critical milestone that completes the consultative process and launches the next phase of action to address the most pressing humanitarian challenges of today and tomorrow. These discussions provided important inputs to the Secretary-General’s report, which will be available in early 2016.
